Volunteer with Place of Rest
Place of Rest is a free community grave locator. Families can only find a grave when someone has recorded it. Volunteers walk a cemetery, transcribe what is on the headstone, and submit it for review.
What to collect
- The person's name, and dates when the headstone shows them.
- A clear photograph of the headstone.
- The grave location: section, plot and a map pin when you can stand at the grave.
- A correction when an existing record does not match the stone.
Choose the cemetery first, then use its contribute form. Submissions stay unpublished until they are reviewed. If a name is missing from search, that means it is not recorded yet, not that the person is buried somewhere else.
Choose a cemeteryPhotography etiquette
Photograph the headstone, not the people visiting it. Leave other visitors, children and vehicle number plates out of the frame, and retake the photo if they appear.
Only upload photographs you took yourself or have permission to share. Copy names and dates from the stone rather than guessing.
The Contributions Policy covers accuracy, image rights, moderation and removal.
How coordination works
Before you start a large section, tell the project which cemetery or section you will cover. A coordinator assigns that patch so two people are not recording the same ground.
Use the contact form and choose “Offer to volunteer”. Name the cemetery and, if you know it, the section. You will be pointed at the contribute form for that cemetery. There is no separate survey app: one record at a time is enough until the volume shows a faster workflow is needed.
